If the news out of Lansing this week has taught us anything, it's that we can't wait around for the funding to appear from the state. We need to move forward with creating school systems that prepare our students to compete in a 21st century global economy.

Superintendent of Public Instruction Mike Flanagan addressed attendees this morning, the morning after Gov. Granholm issued a proration letter that will leave schools with $127 less per pupil. Superintendent Flanagan reminded attendees that as fiduciaries of our local school districts, they have the responsibility to let our state leaders know if these cuts aren't something we can sustain.

Well the first day of the 2009 Fall Conference has drawn to a close, and I must say it was a most productive day. Conference attendees drew on experts in school law to bring them up to date on the latest legal issues, including how to prepare for the precarious financial situation that many districts find themselves in given the latest state budget news.
