Education's complex challenges require leaders who can study problems from a variety of perspectives. Because societal and educational issues cut across disciplines and professional boundaries, school policy makers must possess a vast range of knowledge and experience - school law, curriculum, finance, labor and community relations, policy and budgets, not to mention bond campaigns, lobbying, special education and parliamentary procedure.
Through major conferences, special workshops, drive-in seminars, and a year-round schedule of classes, MASB serves member needs for training and professional development. MASB helps new and veteran trustees build their knowledge and sharpen their boardsmanship and leadership skills. Following is a summary of MASB's main annual events.
Annual Fall Conference & Exhibit Show
The Annual Fall Conference is MASB's premier leadership event of the year. Held at locations across the state, the Annual Fall Conference features nationally acclaimed speakers addressing current education topics. Participants also have several opportunities to share ideas and best practices with colleagues, and participate in CBA classes. The exhibit show features a host of education vendors under one roof who are eager to do business with school districts.
Joint Legislative Conference
Each year, MASB joins with the Michigan Association of School Administrators to provide school board members and administrators the opportunity to connect with their legislators and get up-to-speed on the year's key legislation affecting education.
The Urban Project
This annual workshop addresses issues facing under-resourced schools in Michigan. The workshop provides attendees with tools to address the unique challenges facing these districts and advance student performance and growth.
New Board Member Institute
The New Board Member Institute is designed to give an intensive introduction to board development for new and first-term board members. This comprehensive workshop exposes new board members to their role on the board of education. Through a network of CBA classes, board members will get an overview of board service.
CBA Courses
Throughout the year, and at locations across the state, MASB offers a variety of CBA courses designed to improve your skills as a school board member. With more than 50 different courses on topics from school law and policy to community relations, strategic planning and evaluating the superintendent, there's something for board members of every experience level.
