The Summer Leadership Institute is appropriate for school board members of all experience levels and school superintendents seeking to collaborate with school board members.

Keynote Session With Dr. Debbie McFalone

Better Together: School Boards as High-Functioning Teams
How we interact with one another at the board table and in relation to our school board work has an impact on our students. In this enlightening conversation, Dr. Debbie McFalone will help us understand the strong impact relational trust has on student achievement in school communities. She’ll help us explore how fostering empathy, commitment, compassion, patience and the capacity to forgive among our fellow board members can have a tremendous impact for our students.

Learning Lab—Lessons to be Learned From Monday Night Mayhem: A Mock School Board Meeting

Watch a mock board meeting in session then dive into an exploration of what you saw and heard. You’ll work with colleagues to examine the meeting and consider how the findings may apply to your own school board.

Panel Session: Real Life, Real Answers

After a full morning of thinking and learning, pause for an opportunity to ask your burning questions. A panel of experienced board members and MASB staff will be ready to bring real answers to your real life questions.

In this rapid-fire session, participants will engage in structured conversations around some of today’s hottest topics for school boards. With the help of a facilitator to navigate the process, small groups will share experiences, successful strategies and insights with colleagues.

From Good to Great:  How Governance Standards May Take Your Board to the Next Level
There are certain fundamental principles involved in effective school district governance. To support boards in their efforts to govern effectively and enhance the public’s understanding of the critical role of school boards, MASB worked with board members and superintendents throughout Michigan, as well as state leadership, to establish the Michigan Board of Education Governance Standards. In this session, we’ll explore the Standards and discuss how embracing standards can have a big impact on your district.

What is the 2017-2018 school year shaping up to be? Hear from the State Superintendent as he shares what’s on the horizon and his plan to move Michigan’s schools forward with success.
