Statement Regarding Passage of the Student Opportunity Scholarship Program Legislation

In response to the Michigan Senate rapidly passing House Bills 5404 and 5405, which create the Student Opportunity Scholarship Program, please see the statement from Michigan Association of School Boards’ Executive Director Don Wotruba, CAE below:

“The continued expediency around this unconstitutional legislation is disappointing in many ways, but particularly in its lack of transparency. There were no individuals or entities outside of legislators who were given an opportunity to provide comment or testimony in the Senate today.

The Michigan Constitution clearly states that direct and indirect aid cannot go to nonpublic schools—period. Additionally, there are many more important issues our state legislators should be focusing on that would benefit Michigan’s students, such as addressing staff shortages and expanding broadband to underserved areas.

We look forward to the Governor’s veto of this atrocious waste of time and legislators getting back to work on ways to further support Michigan’s public school districts and the 1.43 million children they serve.”
