A new budget year is upon us and that means it’s time to make plans for the next 12 months, including what learning opportunities you will want to take advantage of. The MASB Event Calendar is filling up with both online and face-to-face prospects to aid you in being the most effective board member you can be, starting with the 2018 Summer Institute this August in Novi.

Sessions, workshops and Board Member Certification Classes (CBAs) are taking place Aug. 10 – 12 at the Hyatt Place at the Suburban Collection Showplace. Friday offers a morning session featuring a series of briefings for school board members from subject matter experts on key topics that will help to inform your decisionmaking.

Topics include:

  • Special education
  • Changes to student assessments
  • Transportation trends and tips
  • School finance issues and options
  • Local ESSA plans

The afternoon session will focus on creating safer schools, led by school safety experts and district leaders.

In addition to Friday’s morning and afternoon sessions, there are 20+ CBA and workshop offerings including:

  • Reporting and Monitoring Organizational Performance (CBA 229)
  • Advocacy for Public Education (CBA 261)
  • Board Operating Procedures (CBA 253)
  • Board Leadership: Overcoming Obstacles (CBA 325)
  • Data First: Foundations I (CBA 341)
  • Board Presidents and Advanced Board Presidents Workshops

You’ll want to take advantage of these courses now, as those listed above won't be offered again until next year!
