As the Nov. 6 election draws closer, candidates and special interest groups will be ramping up their campaigns by increasing phone calls, commercials and mailings to deliver their political messages. During this time, school districts will have to remain vigilant to ensure their funds and resources are not being used to support such political messages, which would be contrary to Michigan’s Campaign Finance Act.

Registration for all Legislative Priority Setting Meetings is now open! These meetings will be held throughout the state over the next two months to bring together board members, superintendents and MASB’s Government Relations staff to brainstorm on what your Association’s focus should be for the 2019-2020 legislative session.

The 25 recipients of the 2018 MASB/SET SEG Foundation Education Excellence Awards are some of the greatest examples of unique and innovative public school programs in the state of Michigan. Over the next few months, MASB will share the details of each program, presented in alphabetical order by district. This week we highlight the Front Street Writers at Traverse Bay Area ISD.

In the most recent MI SoundBoard podcast, Executive Director Don Wotruba sat down with Emergency Planning Coordinator for the Missouri School Boards Association John Warner following his presentation at the 2018 MASB Summer Institute. They discussed what's being done in other states around the country within school districts to address school safety concerns.

Another summer is coming to a close and as fall approaches, Team MASB is looking forward to meeting with you and other school leaders from around our state at the 2018 Annual Leadership Conference to be held at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel and DeVos Place in Grand Rapids, Nov. 1 – 4. We need each of you there to contribute to Building a Better Michigan.

Two years ago, anyone could have walked in and out of Glen Lake Community Schools at any time of the school day—unchecked and unidentified. When Sander Scott came on as the district’s superintendent in 2016, he knew that had to change.

MASB’s Delegate Assembly is one important way you can be involved and influence your Association. It’s your opportunity to voice your board’s opinion on state issues and the MASB’s direction. The 2018 Delegate Assembly will begin Thursday, Nov. 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the Amway Grand Hotel in Grand Rapids, the night before the Annual Leadership Conference begins.

The filing deadline for this year’s elections has come and gone and some districts do not have enough candidates running to fill each vacant position. If your district finds itself in that position you will likely need to start recruiting individuals who may be interested in being appointed.

In the most recent MI SoundBoard podcast, Executive Director Don Wotruba sat down with Dr. Eden Wells, Chief Medical Executive for the state of Michigan and Nick Lyon, Director of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. They discussed vaccinations and what they look like from a public education perspective, including school aid penalties, building closures as a result of flu outbreaks and other factors.

On Friday, the MASB Board of Directors overwhelmingly voted to support the Proposal 2 Voters Not Politicians ballot initiative joining a large, bipartisan coalition.

Robert works full-time making $10.75 an hour, and lives with his nine-year-old son Roland, 20-year-old daughter Rita and one-year-old grandson Ryan in a three-bedroom rental desperately in need of major repairs that would help lower their utility bills. There is no contact with his ex-wife who also does not pay child support, and their monthly expenses slightly exceed the money brought in through work and food stamp supplements. How should Robert and his family make ends meet without having to give up necessities or going into debt?

Earlier this month, a group called Michigan for Vaccine Choice emailed many school districts in the state alleging that Michigan Department of Health and Human Services policies on immunization records require school districts to violate the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. As you may know, FERPA generally requires that schools not share education records of their students unless that information is directory information, the parents or an adult student consents to sharing the information, or an exception to FERPA applies.

As districts are looking to plan their curriculum for the 2019-2020 school year (we know, already?!), there are a number of opportunities related to computer science that will help prepare schools for new standards that are in the works to be launched early next year.

Each school day presents the possibility of a district finding themselves liable for incidents that happen on school grounds or at school-sponsored events. In fact, school districts throughout the state are encountering liability issues. But through third-party contracts, districts can gain protection and peace of mind.
