In response to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s 2023 budget address, please see the statement from Michigan Association of School Boards Executive Director Don Wotruba, CAE below:
"The core mission of the Michigan Association of School Boards is to empower public school districts with supports that facilitate an equitable and exceptional education for all students. Numerous budget proposals named by the Governor will strengthen initiatives that are fundamental to that mission.
We are particularly excited by the proposed $166 million toward free meals for all public school students. This is a legislative priority that MASB has been working toward, and it is a victory for Michigan public schools and their students. School districts realized firsthand the power in this initiative during the pandemic, when the U.S. Department of Agriculture provided the benefit universally. Making free meals a permanent part of public schooling is key for improving student nutrition and learning, increasing educational equity and reducing burdensome paperwork for families and districts.
Equally significant are the proposed $458 increase in per-pupil funding and the significant investments in teacher development and recruitment. We fully support the Governor’s proposed increases for the MI Future Educator Fellowship program, student teacher stipends, specialized teacher recruitment programs and teacher mentors. By ensuring that our schools have the funds and talent necessary for excellent learning environments and experiences, Michigan is investing in its future thought leaders and changemakers—our kids."
