The demand for qualified counselors continues to grow, making it increasingly challenging to find suitable individuals. To address this increasing need, Student Mental Health and Retention Training (SMART) funding is now available. SMART is a state-funded "Grow Your Own" program for first and second-year graduate students working in eligible school districts and ISDs.
SMART funding focuses on graduate students who are completing field work in school psychology, school counseling and social work. This multi-year funding will fulfill the student’s training requirements for graduation. To be eligible, students must be enrolled in a graduate program approved by the Michigan Department of Education. Approved programs can be either in-state or out-of-state.
To qualify for SMART, ISDs and Public Schools must serve 50% of students who are eligible for free or reduced lunch. The application is now open in NexSys and can be accessed at MiLogin.
