MASB’s Delegate Assembly – Be a Delegate for Your District

Aug 6, 2024, 12:00 AM by Jennifer Smith, MASB Director of Government Relations

MASB’s Delegate Assembly is the annual meeting of our members. This year, it will be held at 7:00 pm on Thursday, October 24 at the Lansing Center in Downtown Lansing. The assembly is made up of at least one voting delegate from each school district in the state. Districts have until Friday, Oct. 4, 2024, to certify their delegates. The last few years, we have seen participation from districts slowly increasing, and we continue to try to grow the number of delegates in attendance. Join us this year and help continue the trend!

The call for delegates went out to all districts on July 18. Superintendent secretaries received an email with a link to certify the official voting delegates and alternates who will represent their board of education. Choosing your district’s delegate(s) is done at a regular board meeting by board vote and then the names can be submitted to MASB. If you have questions about this process, please contact Board Liaison Cheryl Huffman. The deadline to submit delegate names for your district is Oct. 4.

The assembly begins with reports from MASB’s President and Past President of the Board of Directors, a quick legislative update, and a report from the Executive Director, Don Wotruba. It then moves to the meeting's purpose, action on proposed resolutions and bylaws. These are the items that the Resolutions & Bylaws Committee have put forth for the membership.

The work of MASB’s Resolutions and Bylaws Committee is what sets the agenda for the Delegate Assembly. The annual process to update, add and delete resolutions and bylaws begins at the Committee’s first meeting in February. The Committee is made up of members from around the state. The members of this committee review the current resolutions and bylaws that govern and provide direction for MASB. They also review any resolutions recommended to the committee from an individual district and determine if they can be accepted as is or with some changes.

During this review, the committee may decide to modify some of the current resolutions. The committee also has the power to delete resolutions that are no longer relevant and/or develop new ones to address current issues. All MASB members also have the opportunity to directly affect their Association by submitting resolution or bylaw changes to the Resolutions and Bylaws Committee.

This process is driven by you, our members, and the boards that you represent. We encourage each district to select delegates to volunteer their time and share their thoughts with fellow members across the state to better public education. This is one important opportunity that you don’t want to miss to voice your board’s opinion on state issues and public education in Michigan.
