2021 Annual Leadership Conference#MASBALC 2021 FAQs

General Information

How can I attend ALC?

We have reimagined our Annual Leadership Conference as a hybrid event. This means you can attend in person at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel and DeVos Place in Grand Rapids or attend from the comfort of your home, at your district or from anywhere with a strong internet connection.

Thursday through Sunday’s in-person conference will be held at the Amway Grand Plaza, Curio Collection by Hilton and DeVos Place in Grand Rapids. Virtual conference attendees will enjoy a full ALC experience including General Sessions, Clinic Sessions, networking, Exhibit Show and more.

What is a hybrid event?

A hybrid event consists of in-person learning and networking opportunities, as well as live streaming and recorded activities for virtual attendees.

Why offer a hybrid ALC?

MASB is committed to providing quality training for Michigan’s school board members and administrators in a safe environment for all. The hybrid option will enable members to access and participate in the 2021 ALC in the environment where they feel most comfortable.

What is the cost to attend?

The early registration fee is $349 if you register on or before Sept. 24, 2021, for the full conference (Friday and Saturday). The rate is $383 after Sept. 24. The fee is the same for in-person and virtual attendees. There are separate fees for in-person preconference events on Thursday and for in-person Board Member Certification (CBA) classes offered throughout the conference dates.

Will I earn EDU credits toward my member awards?

Yes, all attendees will have the opportunity to earn EDU credits for each day they register and attend ALC.

Am I able to transfer my registration to virtual?

You can transfer your registration up to two weeks prior to the event start date. The deadline to change is Thursday, Oct. 28, 2021. All transfers or cancellations must be submitted in writing to [email protected] A $25 fee will be charged for any and all cancellations. Substitutions are accepted in lieu of a cancellation. There is no refund one week prior to the event (Nov. 4, 2021).

Will sessions be recorded for later viewing? How can I access them?

General Sessions and selected Clinic Sessions (denoted in the program as those offered virtually) will be recorded and available on demand to all registered attendees following ALC. Registered attendees will have access to these recordings through our virtual platform and/or on MASB’s learning portal.

In-Person Attendees

What safety precautions can I expect if I attend in person?

Our top priority is the health and safety of all attendees. MASB, Amway Grand Plaza Hotel and DeVos Place will adhere to all federal, state and local (Kent County) guidelines regarding in-person gatherings as they stand in November. At a minimum, MASB and the venue will be providing the following:

  • Hand sanitizer outside all meeting rooms
  • Increased spacing in meeting rooms and utilizing overflow rooms
  • Some sessions in the conference app and virtual platform
  • Additional registration hours to eliminate congestion
  • Increased cleaning and sanitation in all meeting and hotel spaces
  • An event Code of Conduct all in-person attendees must agree to
  • Promotion of COVID-19 best practices throughout the event

Additional precautions may include: staggered schedules for room capacity limits; wearing a mask or face covering; social distancing; temperature checks; and/or daily self-screening. We will share more detailed information with attendees as we get closer to the event.

How many people can attend in person?

The in-person capacity limit is 500 individuals.

How will this conference differ from ALCs of the past?

Amway Grand Plaza Hotel and DeVos Place meeting rooms will be utilized differently than during previous conferences. General Session and meal seating will be reduced in size and additional viewing rooms will be used to allow for a more comfortable space. The schedule may allow for staggered attendance in larger group settings to reduce congestion. Clinic Sessions will be first come, first served. Seating will be limited to allow for social distancing so plan on arriving early to secure a seat. Once the seats are taken, no more attendees will be allowed into the room.

What meals are included?

Both breakfast and lunch will be provided for all-day registered participants and guests only. Dinner will not be provided and is on your own. Grand Rapids offers a variety of restaurants within walking distance of the hotel. Guests who wish to attend breakfast and lunch can register for a guest meal ticket for each day; preregistration is required.

If I attend in person, will I have access to virtual sessions?

Yes, you will have access to the virtual event platform and mobile app for the entire conference. Through the platform, you can interact via chat, messaging or video calls with MASB staff, exhibitors, sponsors, virtual attendees, other in-person attendees and presenters. Selected Clinic Sessions will be recorded and available on demand for all registered attendees following ALC.

How can I book my hotel room at the group rate?

Make reservations online or call 800.253.3590. Mention MASB Annual Leadership Conference to get the group rate of $167 per night (before applicable taxes and fees). To receive the group rate, reservations must be made prior to Oct. 8, 2021.

You can interact via chat, messaging or video calls with MASB staff, exhibitors, sponsors, other virtual attendees, in-person attendees and presenters.

How do I access ALC as a virtual attendee?

You will receive an email confirmation from MASB prior to the start of the event with a link to the virtual event platform and mobile app. A profile will be setup for you based on the email address you provided at registration. Once logged in from your laptop or mobile device, you can update your profile, chat with attendees, access sessions and materials all while on the event platform or mobile app.

How can I attend Certified Board Member (CBA) courses?

CBA courses will not be part of the virtual agenda at ALC. However, an entirely virtual CBA weekend is planned for Dec. 10 – 12, 2021. Check masb.org/calendar for more details and a full class schedule.
