MASB Issues Statement on Confirmation of Betsy DeVos as U.S. Secretary of Education

LANSING, Mich. – Don Wotruba, Executive Director of the Michigan Association of School Boards, issued the following statement on the confirmation of Betsy DeVos as the U.S. Secretary of Education:

“We would first like to congratulate Ms. DeVos on her confirmation. Any time someone from Michigan is put into a national position of prominence, it has the potential to help bring attention to, and improve our way of life in this state.

“We look forward to working with Ms. DeVos on issues where we have common ground, and hope she will work to improve public education not only in Michigan, but across the country. From our perspective, helping public schools is getting them the appropriate resources and assistance needed for their kids to be successful; it is not just more choices for parents. It’s clear school choice in Michigan has not been an effective or successful option for our students and parents.

“We also will never support any type of voucher plan for education, and encourage Ms. DeVos not to pursue such a divisive issue. Michigan voters have clearly spoken on the idea of vouchers, soundly defeating it when it was on the ballot. We sincerely hope Ms. DeVos will focus her work on fixing our existing public education system by addressing major issues facing our schools, such as equity. We need to ensure every child has the opportunity to receive a quality, public education. We all need to work together to make that a reality.”
